How to run a company

Bhutanese and Indian chief executives are attending a two-week course in Thimphu on best management practices, good corporate governance and business strategies from professionals with the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, India.

Among the executives, 31 are Bhutanese and 25 Indians. The course, which started yesterday, is part of Druk Holding and Investment’s education city project, which is also expecting a possible collaboration. While Bhutanese managers are paying a subsidized Nu 50,000 for the two-week course, the Indians are paying Nu 120,000 excluding their travel expense and hotel charges.

The institute’s management development program chairman, Tathagatha Bandopadhay, who was in Thimphu yesterday, said the first week will focus more on basic analysis and decision making, operation and management, and understanding the health of a company; while the second week will focus more on strategic management, marketing strategies, costing, valuations and mergers and acquisitions.

At the opening yesterday, the works and human settlement minister, Yeshey Zimba, who is also the chairman of the empowered joint group, said that he wished to have the institute’s (IIMAS) campus in the education city. The Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, is considered a top businessschool in India, and is world renowned for management studies, attracting many international students. Lyonpo Yeshey Zimba said that Bhutan has done what it could in training civil servants in management, what it now needs to produce are entrepreneurs, who are acceptable throughout the world. Bandopadhay said that, while it was important to have investment, capital and resources for the country’s development, the most important of all is human capital. To suffice this need it is imperative to set up institutions that can generate such potential.
“Excellent institutes in technology and management are a prerequisite for a modern nation,” he said.
