Bhutanese Architecture Steeped in Tradition
Five years in the making, Zhiwa Ling Heritage is a tribute to the ornate architectural arts of Bhutan. Every part of the hotel is handmade, from the massive hand-carved wooden beams to the colourful, hand-painted ceilings and walls. Over sixty local artisans were employed to lovingly handcraft its exterior and interior design, envisioned by architect Peter Kampf.
The main building is built in the tradition of a Bhutanese Dzong (Fortress) with intricate carvings, paintings and antique Bhutanese textile collections. This traditional Bhutanese architecture and design flows throughout the property and also features in our junior suites, one-bedroom suites, and The Royal Raven Suite.
Zhiwa Ling Heritage is an exuberant celebration of the best of a 1,000-year-old culture combined with modern day innovations.
Experience the Ultimate Bhutanese Lifestyle
THE ROYAL RAVEN SUITE
The Royal Raven Suite provides the ultimate Bhutanese experience. It is named in part to honour Uzha Jarog Dongchen – the Raven Crown of Bhutan, a symbol of Mahakala and protective deity of the first Zhabdrung.
Featuring two bedrooms, a large dining and sitting room, private porch, and private shrine room, the Royal Raven Suite is the perfect retreat for a wedding party or family celebrating a special occasion.
The shrine room is blessed by the trinity Goddess: the Namgyelma (Skt. Vijaya), the Tsepame (Skt. Amitayus) and the Delma (Skt. White Tara). Three deities as one, called upon for longevity, happiness and wealth.
STRETCH OUT IN A TAKIN OR BLUE POPPY SUITE
Experience Paro Valley from the second floor of our main building. The Blue Poppy Suite and the Takin Suite both have charming views of the valley and hotel grounds. Each has a living room with private balcony and a spacious bedroom and bathroom with Swedish underfloor heating. With 157 square metres of space, this suite provides plenty of room for you to relax in. An adjoining Junior Suite, with a connecting door, can be booked on request to accommodate your family group with ease.
REST IN A MAGNOLIA, DRUGYEL OR JUNIPER SUITE
Enjoy splendid views of Paro Valley and surrounding mountains from our Magnolia and Drugyel suites. The suites are spread across eight different cottages linked to the main building by an attractive pathway. Each room is fitted with either a Californian king size bed or two comfortable Californian queen beds. All bathrooms have a full size bath tub with shower over and Swedish underfloor heating. A sitting area with leather sofas and a private balcony make these spacious rooms luxurious and private.
Or stay in the main building in one of our Juniper suites. Located on the second floor within easy reach of our in-house temple, each suite features a Californian king size bed and separate bath and shower in the bathroom. At 49 square metres, our Magnolia, Drugyel and Juniper junior suites are the largest standard rooms in Bhutan.
CONNECT HEAD WITH HEART ON THE YOGA MAT
Zhiwa Ling Heritage hosts many visiting yoga teachers who hold yoga retreats in our Samden Meditation House. Enjoy a magical view of Paro Taktsang (Tiger’s Nest) during your yoga class which will include nurturing postures, rhythmic breathing exercises and meditation to finish. Focus attention on the breath, stretch your body and cultivate a greater sense of mindfulness.
We can cater for yoga on demand with an excellent local teacher, but if you would prefer to practice independently feel free to use the mats, bolsters, straps and equipment available.
After your yoga session, why not visit Menlha Spa for a massage or spa treatment of your choice or to book in for a relaxing sauna.
TAKE A BREAK OR SOCIALISE IN THE TEA HOUSE
Tea houses are a part of the fabric of life in the Himalayas. They are a place to rest, replenish and socialise, and often form part of the family home for many in Bhutan.
The Tea House at Zhiwa Ling Heritage is an intimate and private cottage designed in the spirit of this tradition. It is elevated for pristine views of the rock faces and mountains protecting Bumdra – meaning ‘Rock of One Hundred Thousand Foot Prints’. Cast your eye a little further to view Sang Choekor Buddhist College, the beginning of the Bumdra trek.
Located near the Meditation House and our greenhouse, the Tea House welcomes you in to relax. Enjoy reading your own book or choose one from our abundant library. Write postcards or scribble in your journal. Sip an invigorating cup of Bhutan butter tea. Recharge your soul in this cozy nook which also features a wood burning stove to keep you warm on cold days.
MEDITATION CLASSES FOR QUIET CONTEMPLATION
Set aside time and shift into the present moment for an experience like no other. The Samden Meditation House – Samden meaning Fulfillment of Good Intentions – is here for your quiet contemplation. Experience direct views of Paro Taktsang (Tiger’s Nest) – one of the most sacred destinations in Bhutan.
You are also invited to sit with accomplished monks who teach Buddhist meditation classes here on request. Meditation classes for individuals and groups are custom designed in discussion with recognised practitioners and therefore require an advance booking of at least one week prior to arrival. From time to time visiting meditation teachers and also yoga teachers are available by arrangement. Please feel free to ask if one of our regular visiting teachers is in residence.
UNWIND WITH A DRINK AT THE MAD MONK BAR
Gathering at the Mad Monk Bar for a drink before dinner at Lingka or Gawa Restaurant, or for after-hours fun, is a highlight for guests. Located adjacent to reception in the main lobby, the Mad Monk Bar is an ideal venue for you to unwind. It is named after Drukpa Kunley (1455-1529) also known as The Divine Madman of the Dragon Lineage. Drukpa Kunley was a great master of Mahamudra in the Drukpa Kagyu Buddhist tradition. He became famous for his teaching methods, using outrageous behavior and ribald humor in order to awaken people he met and free them from conventional morality and self-obsession!
A variety of international beverages as well as local beers and spirits are served in a cozy setting. Ask your bartender to mix you a delightful cocktail, appropriately named the “Dragon warmer,” or try Ara – a local homemade rice wine.
