Bhutan’s young prince takes first steps

The King of Bhutan Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and his father, the fourth King of Bhutan Jigme Singye Wangchuck, supporting Bhutan's young prince Gyalsey Jigme Namgyel in Thimphu on March 11. Prince Jigme, who celebrated his first birthday in February, is pictured standing up for the first time. The photo was taken after a heavy snowfall in Thimphu, and features the 17th century fortress Tashichhodzong, which houses the Golden Throne Room.

Bhutan's 31-year-old king has married a student 10 years his junior in a colourful ceremony showcasing the rich Buddhist culture of one of the world's most remote and insular countries. King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck crowned his queen, Jetsun Pema, at the end of a series of rituals in the 17th-century fortified monastery chosen for the occasion.
